WHAT IS THE DOJO ETIQUETTE?

Karate is more than technique and exercise it embraces a standard of behaviour in people that sets them apart. This makes it excellent for children and those wishing to enhance their life skills and confidence. In common with all respectable karate clubs that practice traditional martial arts the Stourport ,Cleobury and Clows Top Sankukai Clubs observe certain rules and standards to ensure that the Dojo is a safe environment for people to train in. That way everyone knows what is expected of them at the club, when visiting other clubs or when a visiting instructor attends at our club. These simple rules are set our below:
  • Bow on entering and leaving the Dojo
  • Do not talk when an instructor is talking
  • Listen carefully to the instructor at all times
  • Do not wander off for drinks during lesson (ask permission)
  • To ask a question raise your hand and wait patiently until the instructor acknowledges you
  • Always address the instructors as 'Sensei' at any dojo even if they are not a Dan grade (black belt)
  • Ask permission to leave the Dojo when a lesson is in progress
  • If entering a lesson late, re-entering a lesson after a break or leaving early kneel at the side of the Dojo and wait to be invited to join in by the Sensei
  • Bow to Dan grades as they enter the Dojo and address them as Sensei
  • Keep your finger and toe nails short and clean
  • Do not wear jewellery during training
  • Cover any open wounds with a waterproof dressing
  • Remove any nail varnish
  • Always wear clean and pressed Gi (suits)
  • Help make the Dojo a safe and pleasant place to train and assist in keeping it tidy
  • Always be respectful to other students
